Today the Environment Committee of the European Parliament voted on a report on food information to consumers, adopting the Committee’s recommendation for second reading.
The text agreed by the Committee requires the indication of the country or place of provenance to be mandatory for:
- all meat and poultry
- milk and dairy products
- meat, poultry and fish when used as an ingredient in processed food
For meat and poultry, the country or place of provenance may be given as a single place for animals only where the animals have been born, reared and slaughtered in the same country or place. In other cases information on each of the different places of birth, rearing and slaughter shall be given.
The Committee also agreed that a label specifying “meat from slaughter without stunning” must be introduced.
The adoption of the European Parliament report in plenary is scheduled for early July.
